the night before my birthday, i was treating my two chinchillas to some craisins, their favorite treat. they've gotten in the habit of reaching out and grabbing my fingers to pull close to them, the better to reach the craisins. while they were happily eating from my hand, i saw out of the corner of my eye little gray things and immediately thought mice had gotten into their cage. but no, we had chinchilla babies!!! okay, i knew it was a possibility being that i was housing a male with a female, but the female is older and has never shown much interest in the male. apparently, she did at some point. anyway, they are the cutest things ever. we had 3 but lost one. the two little ones are doing well and, as they get bigger, are hopping all over. there's nothing quite as cute as a baby animal!
I’m a late bloomer, or maybe more accurately, someone who has explored several paths. My early years were spent raising 4 amazing kids, and somewhere in the middle of all that, I went back to school. Starting from the beginning at a community college and finishing with a PhD in biology. My focus was on animal behavior and I got to have 7 wonderful years studying a little rodent, the tuco-tuco, in Argentina. Now, I’m scraping together jobs, teaching biology at whatever college will take me! Currently, I teach intro bio and marine mammals at Santa Rosa Junior College and at UC Berkeley, the schools I attended.
I love nature and animals and going on adventures, especially if those adventures include sea kayaking in the Pacific Northwest! I’m working towards a life with less so that I can have a life of more… less ownership, more freedom to explore. I’m pretty lucky, surrounded by the best friends and family one could wish for. So here I am on my second (or third) journey, ready to embrace whatever comes next!
those things are way cuter than the tucos!!
ReplyDeletewell... i don't know about "way cuter" but they are damn cute. i'm not sure if i'm going to be able to give them away!
